CRKT M16-13SFG- a lightweight, durable, useful knife



PROS:

Flippers- The hilt formed by the flippers is extremely handy for protecting knuckles and fingers. I use one for opening, and the other side for closing the knife. I've heard complaints from some people that the flippers keep it from resting right while its in a pocket, but i've found that they are extremely useful for pulling the knife out of a pocket.

autoLAWKS- takes a while to get used to, but ultimately a good idea and adds an additional sense of security.

Veff Serrations- many people don't like the look or the single-edge grind, but i like the more elegant, longer serrations on the sfg. in addition, they seem to be much more effective at cutting through layers of cardboard than more typical serrations, and there is less friction provided by these serrations, meaning a smoother, less bumpy cut.



CONS:

Blade finish-The finish on the blade can be marred- I'm going to be 100% fair and say that I havn't attempted to clean it beyond rubbing the blade down with a rag, but dirt/scratches show up much more on the coated blade than they would on a non-coated blade.

Factory applied lubrication- The oil put on by the factory left a slight blackish grey stain on my khaki work pants where the clip shows on the outside of the pocket. I should have cleaned the knife before I started carrying it, my fault.



Definately in this case the pros outweigh the cons, and I would recommend this knife to anyone looking for a quality tool.

Columbia River Knife Combination Edge M16-10 Compact (Green) M16 Compact EDC (Every Day Carry) These models have non-reflective black titanium nitride coated blades. The contoured handles are long enough for real work tasks. They are still 6061 T6 hard anodized aluminum CNC machined with a perimeter radius for comfort. A stainless steel locking liner with friction grooves gives positive locking. Columbia River Ultima Combination Edge Today's tactical fixed blade knives still resemble the first bronze age daggers of 4000 years ago especially in their handle design. Michael Martinez inventor of the Merlin knife deployment system didn't start out to redesign the fixed blade but he explains "We tested over 400 knives with the Merlin system and I kept noticing how many knives even expensive ones didn't feel right didn't have a grip that gave both control and comfort in the four fundamental tactical grips." Michael's design firm Group Design Inc. reached out to a team of medical specialists for the answer and developed scientific criteria for handles using the services of ergonomic experts kinesthesiologists and a designer of surgical tools. They determined that the ideal knife handle would have 23 points of contact with the hand. Their Ultima achieves 22 of those contact points with its unique patent pending handle. The injection molded black Zytel scales feature over 70 triangular grip segments separated by sipes or "ooze grooves" which channel away water mud and oil. Horizontal grooves are placed under the fingertips for optimum feel. The scientific placement and crisp edges of these segments results in the best possible contact for Conventional Reverse Conventional Ice Pick and Reverse Ice Pick tactical grips. Because tactical knifes are inevitably used as pry bars Michael's team created a butt pry tip as an extension of the blade tang with a rounded tip that is equally useful opening a junction box or breaking a window. I just got this knife yesterday and it is my first fixed blade, the knife is rather large almost 12" long but it is very well balanced when considering its size and that it weighs 9.4 ounces, I myself think that it is a little heavier on the handle end. The veff serrations are very nice and the cut is a lot better than the traditonal triple point serrations. The zytel handle on this knife is very well designed, it is easy to maintain grip, also on the back of the handle is a "butt pry tip" I have not tried this out but I imagine that if it won't help pry anything then it will at least serve as a good glass breaker. The sheath allows for multiple carry options and holds the knife in place very well, even with both security straps unsnapped and shaking the knife upside down it doesn't move at all, the only downside to that is that the sheath leaves a mark on one side of the blade when replaced/removed but the mark isn't permant. I just put a light coat of wd-40 to make sure it stays that way. Overall an excellent knife and so far I would reccomend it to anyone I know.
