Columbia River Van Hoy Snap Lock Razor Sharp Edge Ed Van Hoy is a well known Virginia custom knifemaker and instructor who has a flair for the dramatic and unusual. When his custom Snap Lock was given the "Most Innovative Knife Award" at the American Knifemakers' Guild Show a production version had to be made and here it is the CRKT Snap Lock. It immediately won the Designer Knife award at the 2004 IWA show in Nuremburg Germany and was named "Overall Knife of the Year" at the 2004 Blade Show in Atlanta Georgia. Yes there have been side opening knives before but none quite like Ed's. A patent is pending for his unique opening and locking mechanism. And although Ed's customs are jewelry-like in their materials and finish Columbia River recognized that the Snap Lock could be a very functional daily utility knife. When closed the AUS 4 stainless steel wishbone frame is a 100% effective blade edge guard; when open it is a minimal but very usable handle. The harder you grip the handle the more it locks the blade in place thanks to twelve positive locking surfaces between the frame and locking lugs so it is a very safe and secure system. Ed's cam locking system features two thumb wheels for truly ambidextrous use. Left and right removable pocket/money clips are included. The blade can pivot a full 360 degrees with no clip or 180 degrees in either direction with either stainless steel clip in place. Simply press the thumb wheel and rotate the blade. Opening and closing can be accomplished with one hand and is truly slick and quick. The AUS 4 stainless steel blade itself has a subtle drop point shape almost a Wharncliffe. Five lightening holes also add a decorative touch. Blade frame and clip have a contemporary bead blast finish. I purchased this from a different vendor, but I am impressed with this piece of work. It has a very simple yet ingenious mechanism for locking the blade in open and closed positions. There is essentially no way for it to open without you meaning for it to. Once you get the hang of it it's easy to open and close, although flipping out the blade quickly seems difficult.



It is customizable for left or right-handed people; included in the kit are an extra clip and screws for changing the handedness of the knife. It fits well on a key chain and always gets comments from anyone who sees it. I've taken the clips off for ambidexterity.



The blade is short, but strong. I've used it to cut some plastic and it worked very well. The grip is good, but I'm guessing if you have large hands it may not be so easy to grasp.



My only complaint is that the finish on the blade doesn't seem to be so good, as it is wearing off slowly in some places. But hey, it's an excellent knife otherwise.

Columbia River Bear Claw Razor Sharp Edge Russ Kommer is a bright young custom knifemaker in Anchorage Alaska where conditions are rugged either from the climate or the work folks are doing. He thought a knife that was easy to grip and hard to lose would be a big hit and since he made the first Bear Claw he hasn't been able to meet the demand. His original concept was a self-defense knife for women that would be lightweight easy to access and control. But it seems that every parachutist bush pilot and commercial fisherman who sees one wants one. As a result Russ and CRKT have teamed up to make the production Bear Claw a cutting machine that thanks to the generous size finger hole acts just like an extension of your hand. It is the perfect emergency cutting tool for anyone who needs to quickly cut rope webbing or netting especially if their life depends on it. Blades are full tang taper ground AUS 4 stainless steel with a fine bead blast finish. Friction grooves are placed on the blade spine choil and near the tip for maximum blade control and safety. The contoured Zytel handle fills the hand neatly. The Bear Claw weighs in at a lightweight but stout 3.2 oz. CRKT developed one of their trademark high-tech sheaths for the Bear Claw that's only 1.1 oz. of tough durable injection-molded Zytel. It allows efficient quick release of the knife - just thumb push against the sheath to release smoothly and quietly - or give a sharp pull. Knife is good. Sheath is bad for a fast draw. It holds the knife too tightly in place. Attempting to adjust the retaining bolt on the knife body is difficult. This bolt is actually what holds the knife in place in the sheath. However, it's a star drive bolt (as opposed to phillips or standard, or even hex key) and of an odd size at that. Not that easy to just screw it in a few more turns, and ease up the friction. The resistance is so great to pull the knife from the sheath that occasionally, sheath and knife come away at the same time from my belt.

Knife is good, but, steel could be a little harder to make holding an edge better.

This knife is great for water sports. Was purchased as a gift for a rafting guide. Blunt tip is great for preventing injury or puncturing raft. Curved edge makes cutting tangled rope a breeze. Finger hole allows for comfortable use and security. Safety clip for sheath ensures knife does not inadvertently fall out. Easy attachment kit for sheath to mount to life jacket. GREAT product.

There are a lot of things to love about this little fixed blade knife. One is that it's so low-profile and carries so small that you practically forget you have it. Another is the way it locks into your skeleton via the index finger hole. You just can't drop this knife. Yet another is the relatively big, rounded Zytel scales (handle), which fill the hand and give a nice back-heavy feel to the knife. Along with the distal taper, this makes the blade feel virtually weightless.



Finally, this knife is sharp and aggressive. It'll cut you right out of a seatbelt or other web harness if need be. It's also the fastest way to "untangle" rope, fishing line, or anything else. Compared to even the most convenient folder, it practically jumps into your hand. And because of its small size, if you ever do have to use it to defend yourself, chances are that your target won't know you have it until it's far too late.



Despite the Kydex sheath's configuration, this is too bulky to be a neck knife. I would carry it on my belt, inside or outside the waistband. If it were made of a boutique steel, it would merit 5 stars, but then it would cost too much. I like this knife just the way it is.

The Badger features high-carbon 5Cr15MoV stainless steel for the 2.85 blade, and a non-reflective black oxide coating for maximum corrosion resistance. Its an unusual blade shape that CRKT call a notched drop point with a high hollow grind and a strong center spine. The result is a blade with excellent slicing ability and good penetrating ability with minimum weight.

The Badger features the patented* OutBurstTM assisted opening mechanism, which instantly springs the blade fully open after you have opened the blade approximately 30 degrees. It has Teflon® bearings at the adjustable blade pivot for smooth action.

The grooved thumb disk allows fast either-hand opening, and the locking liner has friction grooves for easy one-hand closing.

CRKT owners expect the strength and rigidity of the InterFrame locking liner build with two 2Cr13 stainless steel liners, also black oxide finished, and a black aluminum back spacer. For the Badger scales, there is a special layered green and black textured G10, which is CNC machined top and bottom to aid grip. The effect is indistinguishable from the best custom builds.

G-10 handle is very nice and blade comes razor sharp out of box. had a good laugh watching my cousin in law cut his finger on it (ha ha). only complaint is had to loosen the pivot screw slightly to get an easier spring assisted opening, other than that, nice blade. one of the better crkt products.
